The Grossarl Valley in Salzburger Land
Tips for excursions
The picturesque Grossarl Valley is located in the Salzburg district of Pongau, about 70 km south of the festival city of Salzburg. The impressive Hohe Tauern Nature Reserve runs along the head of the Grossarl Valley. The flora and fauna of Austria's largest national park are particularly diverse, as the great differences in altitude and the location on the main ridge of the Alps mean that different climatic conditions meet in a small area.
The Grossarl Valley has been nicknamed "The Valley of Alpine pastures" because of its countless alpine pastures, which together make up the highest density of alpine pastures in Austria. About 40 of the more than 60 alpine pastures are farmed.
